American Vice: Mapping the 7 Deadly Sins

American Vice: Mapping the 7 Deadly Sins:

"We're gluttons for infographics, and a team at Kansas State just served up a feast: maps of sin created by plotting per-capita stats on things like theft (envy) and STDs (lust). Christian clergy, likely noting the Bible Belt's status as Wrath Central, question the 'science.' Valid point—or maybe it's just the pride talking."

Gov. Jindal approves new diploma — Baton Rouge, LA

2theadvocate.com | News | Gov. Jindal approves new diploma — Baton Rouge, LA:

"BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Gov. Bobby Jindal approved legislation Thursday creating a new public school curriculum with lowered academic standards, waving aside objections from education advocates who say the change will produce high school graduates who lack basic English and math skills.

Jindal said the new program is part of the state's effort to produce a better-trained work force. He also said the new curriculum, focused on training students for blue collar jobs, would reduce the state's dropout rate."

Using Psychology To Save You From Yourself

Using Psychology To Save You From Yourself : NPR:

"In the city of Greensboro, N.C., there's a program designed for teenage mothers. To prevent these teens from having another child, the city offers each of them $1 a day for every day they are not pregnant. It turns out that the psychological power of that small daily payment is huge. A single dollar a day is enough to push the rate of teen pregnancy down, saving all the incredible costs — human and financial — that go with teen parenting."

The Associated Press: NY school officially renamed for President Obama

The Associated Press: NY school officially renamed for President Obama:

"HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — Students got their wish Wednesday as their school was officially renamed Barack Obama Elementary School. School officials believe it's the first in the nation to be renamed for the 44th president, and they said the idea to change the name of Ludlum Elementary School came from the children themselves. The students wrote essays and held mock debates during the campaign, and paid close attention when Obama and Republican Sen. John McCain met in their final presidential debate at Hofstra University, about a mile from their school on Long Island. 'It really sends a message to children that when they get involved they can make a difference,' said acting school Superintendent Joseph Laria."

Kant's "What Is Enlightenment"

Kant's "What Is Enlightenment":

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one's understanding without guidance from another. This immaturity is self-imposed when its cause lies not in lack of understanding, but in lack of resolve and courage to use it without guidance from another. Sapere Aude! [dare to know] 'Have courage to use your own understanding!'--that is the motto of enlightenment. "

Election officials telling college students they can't vote

This article discusses tactics being used in Colorado to prevent college kids from voting. This is not an isolated incident. See a previous post about this happening in Virginia.

McClatchy Washington Bureau | 09/24/2008 | Election officials telling college students they can't vote:

"WASHINGTON — Colorado Democrats accused a Republican county clerk Wednesday of falsely informing Colorado College that students from outside the state could not register to vote if their parents claimed them as a dependent on their tax returns.

At a news conference in Colorado Springs, Democrats also criticized Robert Balink, the El Paso County clerk and recorder, who was a delegate to the Republican National Convention, for taking other steps they said would dampen voting by college students, who are expected to heavily favor Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

'When election officials spread false information about who is eligible to vote and remove, not add, polling places, we need to be concerned that eligible voters will be denied their right to vote,' said Pat Waak, chairwoman of the Colorado Democratic Party. "

Warning for College Student Voters

Same old s..., different day. This article discusses tactics being used to deter college students from voting.

Warning for College Student Voters :: Inside Higher Ed :: Higher Education's Source for News, Views and Jobs
:

"Last week, Virginia’s Montgomery County, home to Virginia Tech, issued a press release regarding proper protocol for college students registering to vote. In interviews with Inside Higher Ed Tuesday, it was described by turns as ‘unsubstantiated,’ ‘chilling,’ and (more generously) as not ‘incredibly encouraging or friendly.’

It reads, in part: ‘The Code of Virginia states that a student must declare a legal residence in order to register. A legal residence can be either a student’s permanent address from home or their current college residence. By making Montgomery County your permanent residence, you have declared your independence from your parents and can no longer be claimed as a dependent on their income tax filings — check with your tax professional. If you have a scholarship attached to your former residence, you could lose this funding. And, if you change your registration to Montgomery County, Virginia Code requires you to change your driver’s license and car registration to your present address within 30 days.’
